Uric Acid

Diagnostic Testing Medical

Test name: Uric Acid

Order Code: UA

Preferred Specimen: 2mL serum in a Serum Separator Tube (SST or Tiger-top)

CPT Code: 84450

Collection: Allow SST to clot in an upright position for 30 min, then centrifuge sample within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate.

Special Instructions and Considerations: Calcium dobesilate causes artifically low uric acid results. Uricase reacts specifically with uric acid. Other purine derivatives can inhibit the uric acid reaction. Dicynone (Etamsylate) at therapeutic concentrations may lead to false-low results. N-Acetylcysteine at the therapeutic concentration, when used as an antidote to Acetaminophen intoxication, and the Acetaminophen metabolite N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI) independently may cause falsely low results. Venipuncture should be performed prior to the administration of Metamizole, which could lead to false results.

Transport Temperature: Refrigerated

Specimen Stability: 5 days refrigerated

Causes for Rejection: Gross hemolysis
